Deceased is how we name someone who has died, especially not long ago, when we want to sound careful and respectful. As an adjective: her deceased husband, the deceased owner. As a noun we almost always say the deceased — that one person who has died, often at a funeral, in a news report, or in a police statement. It is gentler than dead and more official than late (as in her late father). You would not normally use it for a pet, or for someone who died centuries ago, unless you are being formal on purpose. In warm everyday talk, people use the name, or say the person who died.
