To decant is to pour a liquid from one container into another, slowly, often so the bits at the bottom stay behind. The classic picture is wine: you pour it into a nicer bottle so it can “breathe,” and so you do not serve the sediment. Science labs do the same with chemicals. Though actually, in British English, councils also “decant” people — move them out of a building while it is repaired. No liquid is involved; the idea is “pour them from one place into another.” The wine sense is the one you will meet first.
