A debonair man looks at ease in the world: well dressed, smooth in the way he moves and talks, and sure of himself without to try too hard. The word has a slightly old, film-star flavour — a man in a nice jacket who holds the door, smiles, and never looks ruffled. It is a compliment, but a little dated. Younger people may not say it much, and when they do it can sound playful or even a bit teasing, as if he is putting on a charming act. Dictionaries still keep it mainly for men; you might hear it of a woman in loose talk, but the classic picture is male. It does not just mean rich, and it does not just mean handsome. It is the mix of style, manners, and calm confidence.
組成From Old French de bon aire, “of good stock; noble”: de “of,” bon “good,” aire “manner / breeding.” English kept the spelling debonair for the charming, well-bred look.
