Debauchery is that wild, living itself — the drink, the drugs, the sex, often all together. Newspapers sometimes use it with a wink (“a night of debauchery”). History books use it more seriously about courts and rulers. It is formal and a little theatrical; people reach for it when they want to sound shocked, or to joke about sounding shocked.
