When you debark, you get off a ship. It is the same idea as disembark, though actually most people say disembark, or just “get off the boat.” Debark feels a little more formal, and you also hear it with planes and with animals: cargo workers may debark dogs after a flight. It is the opposite of getting on. One more messy truth: there is another, separate verb spelled the same way that means “take the bark off a tree.” That is not this word. This one is built on an old word for a small ship.
