A deb is a : a young woman, usually from a rich or “society” family, formally introduced to adult social life at a ball or a season of parties. The custom is old-fashioned now, strongest in a certain British and American upper-class world — not a Taiwan custom. You will meet the word in novels, period films, and gossip about that world. Deb is the short, informal clip of (and sometimes of debut). It can sound or slightly mocking, depending on who says it. Deb is also a nickname for the name Deborah, so if you see Deb on its own, look at the sentence: one is a young woman being launched into society, the other is just someone’s name.
