A deanery is either the area a dean looks after, or the house (and sometimes office) where a dean lives. In church life, especially in Britain and in Anglican or Catholic use, a dean is a senior priest. A deanery can then mean a group of local churches under that person, or the official home that comes with the job, often beside a cathedral. You will meet it in church notices, history, and British news more than in everyday Taiwan talk. Though actually, a university dean — the 院長 of a college — is a different kind of dean, and English does not usually call that office a deanery. If you see deanery, think church area or church house, not “the dean’s desk at a university.” It is a quiet, formal word.
