A deacon is a church worker in some Christian churches, one step below a priest in churches that have that ranking. The same English word, though, covers more than one real job, and tidy dictionary lines hide that. In Catholic and churches, a deacon is ordained: a man (and in some churches a woman) set apart for ministry, who may help at the service, visit the sick, and in some cases later become a priest. In many Protestant churches, including ones students know in Taiwan, a deacon is often a church member chosen to help — with care, money, or visiting — and is not a priest or pastor at all. So if you hear deacon, you still need to know which church, or you will picture the wrong person. The word is old and serious in church English, but it is also a given name, Deacon, which is just a name. People say DEE-kən.
