DDT is a chemical that was once used in huge amounts to kill insects on farms, and also to kill mosquitoes and lice. It worked very well, so after the mid-1900s many countries sprayed it widely. Though actually, it does not go away quickly: it stays in soil, water, and animals, and it can thin birds’ eggshells and build up in the food chain. From the 1970s on, a lot of countries banned it for farming. It is not the everyday bug spray in a Taiwan kitchen. Some health programmes have still used it in a tightly controlled way indoors, to kill mosquitoes that carry malaria. People say the three letters one by one, D-D-T. It is a thing, not a company name.
組成The letters stand for the chemical’s long name, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane. Almost nobody says that name out loud.
