A DDoS is an attack on a website or online service. The letters stand for distributed denial of service. Many computers, often spread around the world, send so much traffic at once that the site becomes slow or falls over, and real users cannot get in. The usual aim is to block, not to sneak in and steal. Distributed is the important part: it is not one angry computer; it is a crowd. Though actually, people in gaming and tech news treat DDoS as an ordinary noun: they hit us with a DDoS. Informal tech English. You will see DDoS or DDOS. It is serious when a shop or a hospital site goes down; it is also, sadly, something some people boast about in games.
