If a job, place, or idea is daunting, it looks so big or hard that you feel smaller before you even start. Not scary like a ghost — more “I am not sure I can do this.” A daunting task, a daunting list, a daunting opponent. Teachers, newspapers, and workplaces use it a lot; it is a step more formal than scary, but not stiff. The feeling is “this might be too much,” not “I am in danger.” You can daunt someone (make them lose heart), but the adjective daunting is the form students will actually keep meeting.
