That is the meaning you will meet first in English, and it is still the everyday driving meaning. The word is older than cars: it started as a board that stopped mud from being dashed up onto people in a horse carriage, and later the name moved to the front panel of a car. Though actually, today dashboard is also a very common computer word: a screen that shows you several pieces of information at once, like sales numbers or how a website is doing. That later meaning grew from the car picture — a place where you glance at what matters. Both uses are normal now. In a driving lesson it means the car panel; in an office it often means the computer screen. The sentence around it tells you which one.
