A darbouka is a drum from North Africa and the Middle East. It looks a bit like a goblet or a large cup: wide and round at the top, where you hit the skin with your hands, and narrower toward the bottom. You hold it under one arm or rest it on your lap, and you play it with your fingers and palms — not with sticks. One hand often keeps a deep dum sound in the middle of the skin; the other taps sharper sounds near the edge. You will hear it in folk music, wedding music, and dance music across the Arab world, Turkey, and North Africa. English borrows several spellings: darbuka, darabuka, doumbek. They name the same family of drum. Darbouka is the French-looking spelling; darbuka is also very common in English.
