If something is dappled, it is marked with spots of colour, light, or shade. A dappled horse has those spots on its coat. A dappled path in the woods has patches of sun and shadow. Light through a curtain can leave a dappled pattern on the wall. It is the adjective that belongs with the verb , and people use it a lot in writing about nature and light. It sounds a little prettier and more careful than spotted. Spotted can feel blunt, like dots on a dress; dappled often feels like light that has been broken into pieces.
