In ancient Greek myth, Daphne is a nymph — a young female spirit of the wild. The god Apollo falls in love with her and chases her. She does not want him. As he is about to catch her, she prays to be saved (in the usual telling, to her father, a river god, or to Earth), and she is turned into a laurel tree. Apollo, still in love, makes the laurel his tree: winners’ wreaths in later Greece were leaves of that tree. The story is not a romance with a happy couple; it is a story about pursuit and escape, and about a girl who would rather become wood than be taken. Daphne is also used as a woman’s name, and as the name of a kind of flowering , both from this same Greek word for laurel. This sense is the nymph.
