The Danube is a long, major river in Europe. It rises in the Black Forest in Germany and runs east, through or along Austria, , Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine, and into the Black Sea. lists often name Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Romania; though actually it is a border and a highway for more countries than that, which is why so many capital cities sit on it (Vienna, , Budapest, ). In English it is a proper name: the Danube. It turns up in music and travel writing (the Blue Danube waltz paints it prettier than a working river often looks). It is not a small local stream; think of it as one of Europe’s great roads of water.
組成Attested in English by 1598 (a Middle English form Danby appears earlier). Borrowed from Middle French Danube, from Old French Danube, from Latin Dānubius, from Proto-Celtic *Dānowyos, an extended form of the river-name *Dānu, from Proto-Indo-European *déh₂nu (‘river’, or a river goddess), related to a root meaning ‘to flow, to set in motion’. Distant cousins exist in other languages (for example Ossetian don ‘water, river’, Sanskrit dhánvati ‘it flows’); those are not English pieces of the word.
