    Dank describes a place that is wet, cold, and unpleasant — a cellar, a cave, a basement, a stone corridor that never sees the sun. It is not merely a little moist. Damp can be a towel or a climate; dank has a smell and a chill, and it makes you want to leave. You use it of rooms, earth, air, and sometimes clothes that have sat in that air. It is a little literary or descriptive, more at home in a story than in a weather app. Though actually younger speakers, especially online, also use dank for something they think is excellent or funnily over-the-top (a dank meme). That slang grew out of a drug meaning of dank, not out of the cellar. In class, the meaning you need first is still the wet-and-cold one; if you only learn the meme sense, a sentence about a dank dungeon will sound like praise.

Scholars do not fully agree on the next step: it probably comes from North Germanic — Swedish dank (‘marshy spot’), Icelandic dökk (‘pool’), Old Norse dǫkk (‘pit’), from Proto-Germanic *dankwaz (‘dark’). Others trace it to a West Germanic source such as Dutch damp (‘vapor’) or Middle High German damph, from Proto-Germanic *dampaz (‘smoke, steam, vapor’). Later slang senses grew out of a drug use of the word, not from a new root.
