To dandle a baby is to play with them in a very old, physical way: you hold them in your arms, or sit them on your knee, and move them up and down, gently, often in time with a song or a silly voice. It is not the same as rocking a child to sleep, and it is not the same as dangling them in the air. Dandling is bounce and fuss and delight. in stories are always dandling children. The word feels warm and a little old-fashioned; many people today would just say bounce or jiggle. Scholars are not sure where it came from. They compare it with older words for wandering, trifling, or swinging — including French dandiner, to waddle or swing — but that is comparison, not a clean family tree.
