A dandified man has dressed as if looking good were a full-time job. The clothes are fashionable, careful, perhaps a little too much: a perfect collar, a bright waistcoat, shoes that have never seen mud. The word is not a compliment. It says he cares too much about his appearance, that there is show in it. It comes from dandy, an old name for a man who lived to be looked at. You will hear it more in books than in the street; it is a little dated, and it is usually about men. A woman might be called vain or overdressed instead. Though actually, the sharp edge is not “he looks nice.” It is “he looks as if he knows it.”
