Dalmatia is the long coastal strip of Croatia on the east side of the Adriatic Sea — the water that sits between Italy and that coast. It is known for old stone towns, islands, and summer visitors; Split and Dubrovnik are in this region. It is a historic area and a place people visit, not a separate country. The name is very old: it comes from Latin Dalmatia, from an Illyrian people called the Dalmatae who lived there. That name is believed to come from Illyrian, and it may be connected with a word for sheep — that last part is what scholars think, not something you need in order to use the word.
