The Dakotas are the two US states of North Dakota and South Dakota, sitting one above the other in the north of the United States. People say “the Dakotas” when they mean both, the way they say “the Carolinas.” The name comes from the Dakota people, a Native American nation; English then used it for the land, and later for the two states. The country there is wide and farmed, with hard winters. It is a plural name for a pair of states, not one place and not a person. You can still say North Dakota or South Dakota when you mean only one.
