Dagwood is a character in the American comic strip Blondie. He is Blondie's husband, Dagwood Bumstead: a well-meaning office man, often lazy, often late, famous for falling asleep on the sofa and for building sandwiches so tall they barely fit in his mouth. The strip has run since the 1930s, so older Americans treat him as a household name. The word is a proper name, so it is capitalised. Though actually, English sometimes stretches it: a Dagwood can also mean that kind of huge stacked sandwich, because that is what he eats in the cartoon. For this entry we mean the man.
