Cytology is the science that studies cells — the tiny living pieces that make up plants, animals, and people. It asks what cells look like, what they are made of, and how they work, and it often means looking at them through a microscope. You will meet the word in biology class and in hospital labs, not at the dinner table. A doctor may send a sample to cytology to see if the cells look healthy. The person who does that work is a cytologist. Though actually, everyday hospital talk often just says “the lab”; cytology is the more exact school-and-science name for this one corner of that work.
