Cyrillic is the alphabet used for Russian, Bulgarian, and some other (Slavic) languages, such as Ukrainian and often Serbian. It is a set of letters, not a language. English uses the Latin alphabet; Russian uses Cyrillic, so a page of Russian looks different even before you try to understand a word. Some shapes trick beginners: a letter that looks a bit like a Latin P or H may not sound like English P or H. People say “the Cyrillic alphabet” or “Cyrillic script.” It is a normal school and news word once you talk about Russian. Though actually, not every Cyrillic language uses exactly the same list of letters, and Saint Cyril himself helped make an earlier alphabet called Glagolitic. His students later shaped the Cyrillic letters we know; the name still honours Cyril. Calling it “the Russian alphabet” is the everyday shortcut, and it is a little too small.
組成From the name Cyril + -ic. From Medieval Latin Cȳrillus, from Ancient Greek Κῡ́ρῐλλος (Kū́rĭllos), for Saint Cyril. He devised a predecessor script (Glagolitic); students of his school later devised Cyrillic itself.
