A cymbal is a thin, round metal plate that rings or crashes when you hit it. In a pop or rock drum kit you see several: a big one that you strike for a bright crash, and two small ones that close together (the hi-hat). In an orchestra, a player may hold one in each hand and smash them together. The sound is sharp and shiny, not the dull thud of a drum skin. Though actually, this is not only a Western-band thing: the same family of instruments is the 鈸 you hear at temples and festivals in Taiwan. The old Greek word behind it meant a kind of bowl, which makes sense when you look at the dish-like shape.
