Cuzco is a city high in the mountains of southern Peru. It was once the most important city of the Inca people, with palaces and temples at its heart. In 1533 the Spanish took it and destroyed much of the old city, then built churches and houses on top of the Inca stone. You can still see Inca walls under later buildings. Today travellers use Cuzco as a base for the high Andes and for the road to Machu Picchu. English writes both Cuzco and Cusco; Peru now prefers Cusco. The name is a place name, so it takes a capital letter.
