A cuttlefish is a sea animal with a soft body and ten soft arms: eight shorter arms and two longer ones for catching food. It is not a fish, though the English name says fish. It can change colour in a moment, to hide or to signal. Inside it has a hard white shell (sold in pet shops as cuttlebone, for birds to peck). It belongs with and , not with tuna or salmon. You hear the word in nature films and on menus. The flesh is firm and white, and people fry it, stew it, or grill it. Though actually, once it is cooked, many English speakers cannot tell cuttlefish from , and some menus treat the two as the same.
組成cuttle + fish. Cuttle is the old English name for this animal; fish was added even though it is not a true fish.
