A cutler is a person who makes or sells knives, forks, spoons, and other cutting tools for the table. Long ago this was an ordinary town job: someone had to make the blades and fit the handles. Today the word feels old. You meet it in history, on old shop signs, and as a family name (Cutler), but you almost never use it for a person in a modern kitchen shop. Though actually, in a few places a cutler is still the specialist who sharpens and repairs knives, not a factory that stamps out whole sets. The noun is fairly formal and a little old-fashioned.
