A cut-up is a person who makes other people laugh by doing silly, things — pulling faces, cracking jokes, putting on a little show — especially when they are not supposed to. Teachers know this person in class: the one who gets a going while everyone should be listening. The word is informal, a little old-fashioned in some places, more American than British, and it often carries a sigh: funny, yes, but not at the right time. You would not usually call a professional comedian on stage a cut-up; the point is they are being funny where it is a bit naughty or out of place. Though actually, the verb cut up has other lives — to chop food into pieces, or to be very upset (she was cut up about it) — so this noun is only the clown, not the salad and not the sad feeling.
