To cuss is to swear: to use rude or angry words because something has you. It is mainly American and informal. British speakers more often say swear, or curse in a slightly stronger voice. Cuss is a spoken American form of curse, with the r worn away — the same kind of sound change as arse becoming ass. People also say a cuss word for a swear word. There is another old, colloquial use: a cuss can mean a person, often a difficult or funny one, as in an old cuss. That grew out of swapping a harsher word in phrases like son of a bitch. Depending on the voice, it can sound fond or rude. The verb is the one you will hear most: don't cuss in front of the kids.
