If a woman curtsies, she shows respect by bending her knees, with one foot a little in front of the other, and lowering her body a bit. It is a polite gesture, not a full on the floor. You see it in stories about kings and queens, in theatre, and at a few big formal events. Girls were once taught to curtsy; boys were taught to bow. Today most people in ordinary life do not curtsy — a hello or a handshake is enough — so the word often feels old-fashioned or only for ceremony. It can be a verb (she curtsied) or a noun (a deep curtsy). Another spelling is curtsey.
