If you do something cursorily, you do it very quickly and without much attention to the details. A letter read cursorily is one you glanced at, not one you studied. The word is a little formal; in speech people more often say they “just skimmed” something or did it “quickly.” It is not a compliment: it suggests the job was thin, not thorough. Teachers, reports, and books use it; friends in casual talk usually pick a simpler word.
