1. 1

Cursive is a style of writing in which the letters in a word join up, so the pen does not lift after every letter. Printed letters that stand apart are not cursive; joined handwriting is. You can use it as an adjective (cursive handwriting) or as a noun (write in cursive). English-speaking children used to spend years learning it; some schools still teach it, others do not, so younger and older people may not share the same habit. It is a school and handwriting word, not slang. The underlying idea is that the line of writing “runs” on without stopping.

    • cursive aspect
    • […] of the action or state of affairs expressed by the verb to the time of utterance; rather they express how the speaker regards the event: many grammarians distinguish between a constative aspect, in which an occurrence is simply registered as such, as something concluded, and a cursive aspect, in which the action is described in its course. (I need not add that this is an oversimplification, but there is no time for a more detailed account.)
