A curmudgeon is someone who is often or angry, and who does not hide it. English speakers usually picture an older person — most often a man — who grumbles, finds fault, and seems tired of other people. The word is a little old-fashioned and a little humorous; you can say it with a smile, as if the bad temper has become the person’s character. It names the person, not one bad afternoon. It is as a direct label to someone’s face, but it is common in stories and in talk about “the old curmudgeon next door.” It is informal-literary rather than slang: you will see it in books and newspaper colour more than in playground speech.

組成Attested from the late 1500s as curmudgeon / curmudgen, and in the 1600s in many spellings (cormogeon, curmudgion, curmuggion, and others). There are numerous folk stories about where it came from; none is cleanly agreed. An alternative spelling cornmudgin (1600) was used to translate a Latin word for a corn-merchant, and some have guessed that was the original form — but curmudgeon is recorded earlier, so that spelling looks like a one-off, not the source.
