Curling is a winter sport played on a long sheet of ice. Two teams slide heavy, flat, round stones (usually granite) toward a painted circular target called the house. After a player sends the stone, teammates sweep the ice with special ; sweeping can make the stone travel farther or change how much it bends. That bend is the point of the name: the stone curls as it goes. The game looks quiet and polite, but it is full of planning, and it is a Winter Olympic sport. Scotland and Canada are especially known for it. In everyday English, “curling” with no extra context often means this sport, not doing your hair.
