A curlew is a wild bird of wet, open places — mudflats, marshes, wet fields, and the edge of the sea. It stands on long thin legs and has a long that curves downward, which it uses to pull food from mud and grass. People often know it first by its call: a high, bubbling whistle that carries a long way and can sound a little lonely. It is a bird, not a farm bird and not a ; you meet the word in nature writing, bird lists, and the names of particular kinds (the Eurasian curlew, for example). In everyday city talk it is uncommon; it belongs to the countryside and the shore.

組成From Middle English curlew, from Old French courlieu (the same bird French now calls courlis). People have said the name copies the bird’s cry, but it also seems to have mixed with a dialect word corliu, “runner, messenger,” a variant of coureur — the bird is very good at running.
