A cur is a dog that people speak of — often a mixed-breed dog that growls, snaps, or hangs around the street. The word is old and sharp; you will meet it in stories more than at a real dog park. Though actually, being mixed-breed does not make a dog bad; the word carries a nasty judgement, as if the dog is low and not worth much. People also throw cur at a man they think is or mean: 'You cur!' That use is even more old-fashioned, like something in a film. It is not a neutral word for 'dog'.

組成From Middle English curre ('watchdog, small hunting dog, mongrel'). Perhaps from Middle Low German or North Germanic, possibly from Old Norse kurr ('grumbling'), itself imitating a growl — scholars are not sure. Compare older Dutch and Swedish words for a yard dog, and verbs meaning 'to growl'.
