A cupola is a small round structure on top of a building, shaped like a bowl turned upside down. It often has windows, so light can come into the space below, and it sits on the roof rather than covering the whole building. A big church dome is usually just called a dome; a cupola is the little extra round bit on top — like a hat on a hat. You will see them on old town halls, barns, and some towers. People do sometimes stretch the word to mean any round roof, though the tidy meaning is that smaller top piece.
