A cummerbund is a wide, soft band of cloth that a man wears around his waist with a very formal evening suit — the kind with a dinner jacket. It sits where a might sit, and it is usually black, or sometimes the same colour as the bow tie. The little folds across it traditionally face up. It is not a belt: it does not hold the trousers up. It is there to look neat and to cover the place where the shirt meets the trousers. The word came into English from South Asia; in Persian it is literally "waist-band". British men in India took the clothes and the name home, and it became part of Western evening dress. You will almost only see it at weddings, balls, or in very old-fashioned rooms. Day-to-day English does not need this word.
