Cumbria is a large county in the north-west of England, just under the border with Scotland. People know it for wild, beautiful country: lakes, hills, and old stone villages. The Lake District National Park sits inside it — that is the famous lake-and-mountain holiday area. The main town is Carlisle, up near Scotland. The name is old: it comes from the Cumbri, the people who lived there long ago, and it is a cousin of the Welsh name for the Welsh themselves. Though actually, today's county is not as ancient as the name. In the 1970s England redrew the map and joined older pieces (Cumberland, Westmorland, and bits of others) under this one name. Everyday talk still says "the Lakes" for the holiday bit.
