Culloden is a place in northeast Scotland, on high ground near Inverness. It is also the name of a famous battle fought there in 1746. The Scottish Jacobite army, led by Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Edward Stuart), was badly beaten by a British government army under the Duke of Cumberland, a son of King George II. The fight was short and cruel, and the Jacobites lost. Afterwards the government was very hard on the Highlands — clan life, weapons, and even Highland dress were attacked. In Scotland the name still carries that weight: not only a spot on the map, but the end of that rising, and a wound people still talk about. Outside Britain, learners usually meet it only in history class, or as the battlefield you can visit today.
