A CSE was a school exam in a range of subjects, taken by students in England and Wales before 1988, usually at 15 or 16. It stood beside the harder O-level exams: CSEs were, in the tidy official picture, for students not entered for O-levels, though life was messier than that, and a top CSE grade was treated as equal to an O-level pass. The whole pair was then replaced by the , which is what British teenagers take now. You will meet CSE in older British life stories, job forms, and family talk — "I got my CSEs" — not in today's school hall. It is a history-of-school word. Though actually, young people in Britain may not know the letters at all; it is their parents' and grandparents' exam. It is not Taiwan's 會考, even if the age looks similar.
