Crufts is a very famous British dog show, held once a year, now in Birmingham. Its official name is Crufts Dog Show. Judges look at each kind of dog — each breed — and pick the best of that kind (“best of breed”). Then they pick one dog as the best in the whole show, the Crufts Supreme Champion. People who love dogs watch it on television; winning there is a huge honour in the dog world. You write it with a capital C because it is a name, not a regular word. It is not a race. The dogs are walked and stood still, and the judges look at how they move and how well they match the idea of that breed. Though actually, there is also a lot of public talk about whether some show dogs are bred too much for looks and not enough for health — that argument follows Crufts around. It is named after Charles Cruft, the man who started the show.
