A cruet is the little stand, often metal or glass, that sits on a table and holds the small bottles or pots for oil, vinegar, salt, or pepper. In a restaurant the waiter may set it in the middle so everyone can reach. People also say “cruet set” for the stand plus the bottles together. Though actually, speakers are loose with this word: some call one of those small bottles a cruet, not the holder. Older British English leans toward the stand or the whole set. There is another, quieter use in church: tiny bottles of wine or water at the altar are also cruets. It is not a young, everyday word now. Many tables just get a salt shaker and a bottle of oil, and a real cruet feels a bit hotel-like or old-fashioned.
