Croup is an illness that mostly hits young children. It makes the air tube in the throat swell a little, so the child has a cough that sounds rough and barking, and breathing can feel hard, especially at night. Parents often remember the sound more than a fever. It usually follows a cold, and many cases come from a virus, not from anyone being careless. Children’s doctors may also listen for a high squeak when the child breathes in. Though actually, this is not a general word for any cough, and it is not the same as asthma, even if breathing is the shared worry. You will hear it from clinics and worried families, not as a joke. An Edinburgh doctor, Francis Home, helped fix this name in medicine. The word itself comes from older speech about a hoarse, croaking sound — the sound of the cough, not a separate body part. Most children get through it, but very hard breathing is a reason to get help quickly.
