Crosstown is about going from one side of a town or city to the other side, not just around the corner. A crosstown bus cuts across the map of the city, so the ride can be long and you pass many different parts of town. People also talk about crosstown traffic: that slow river of cars trying to get across the city at a busy hour. You will hear it as an adjective (a crosstown route, a crosstown game between two schools on opposite sides of the city) and as an adverb (we drove crosstown). It feels everyday and a little American. In Britain people more often say they went across town. Though actually, even in American English it is not a grand or technical word. It just paints a picture of crossing the whole town rather than staying in one neighbourhood. It does not mean “in the middle of town.” That idea belongs to downtown.
