    A bar, board, or bit of metal that lies across another thing, to join it, hold it, or make it stronger. A bench may have a crosspiece between two legs. A gate, a window frame, or something on a railway can have one too. It is a maker’s word: you name the part by where it sits — across — not by a special brand or a fancy material. If you can point to “the piece that goes across,” that is the crosspiece.
