If a telephone line is crossed, the call is joined by mistake to one or more other phones, so you can hear someone else’s talk — and they might hear yours. People used to say “we’ve got a crossed line.” It belongs to older phone systems, when real wires could get mixed at the exchange. With mobile phones it is rare, but older speakers still know the phrase, and you will see it in stories. It is not about feeling angry, and it is not about drawing an X on a page.
