In Greek stories, Cronus is a Titan — one of the old gods before Zeus. He is a son of Uranus, the sky. He became ruler of the world, then grew afraid that his own children would take his place, so the stories say he swallowed them. Zeus escaped, grew up, and defeated him. In Roman stories the same figure is called Saturn. Though actually, English speakers often mix him up with Chronos, a different Greek figure who stands for time. They sound almost the same, but they are not the same name in Greek, and words like chronic or chronology do not come from this Titan.
