Croesus was a king of Lydia, a land in what is now western Turkey. He died around 546 BC. Stories say he was so rich that his name became a way to talk about money: if someone is “as rich as Croesus,” they have a huge amount of money. English still uses that phrase, though it sounds a bit old or — you will meet it in writing more than in young people’s chat. It is a person’s name, not a job or a thing. We do not say “a croesus” for a rich person in ordinary talk, except inside that one saying.
